KELLY~BEFORE AND AFTER

Meet Kelly, this would be her second time going natural. Growing healthy thick natural hair are the goals she hopes to attain this time around.

How long were you thinking of going natural? What's the story ?

I had actually gone natural some years ago, back in high school ,I just never BC'd. Soon after ,I decided to put a relaxer back into my hair. I had thought about going natural since 2008 ,but never had the guts to go through with it ,I was worrying about what other people would think about my hair. I was finally inspired by my sister's natural journey ,to go ahead a get it done. Once I realized it would be an exciting experience.

Was your transition a long or short one?

My transition lasted about 9 months, although nine months is a lot of time ,it when by fast.

We all know how important it is to moisturize our hair
while in transition, what products did you use to keep
your hair moisturized?

I really didn't use too many products in my hair, the products I used were the same from my relaxed days. I moisturized my hair with the organics root stimulator deep conditioning packet, and oiled my hair starting out with Africans Best Ultimate Herbal Oil. Well into my transition I started using my own concoction of oil mix which composed of Grape seed oil, Castor oil, Peppermint oil, and Rosemary oil.

What was your staple hairstyle while in transition?

My staple hairstyle was the basic bun, which is what I wore 98% of the time I transitioned.

When you decided to Big Chop, how did you feel about your cut? And how did people react to it?

My reaction to my Big Chop was good ,I had been anticipating and was excited to cut it off. It was liberating to finally have my natural texture completely exposed.

Did you have any regrets?

The only regret I have is that I didn't do it sooner.

What are your long term goals for your hair journey?

My long term goals are to grow completely healthy, full and thick hair. I would love to see how long my hair can grow in its healthiest state.

YLONDA~BEFORE AND AFTER

Meet Ylonda ,getting rid of the relaxer wasn't the only decision she made.Going natural helped her change her complete lifestyle for the better.

How long were you thinking of going natural? What’s the story ?

I’ve always had thoughts about being natural ,but I always associated natural looks with locks, and afros. I like to be versatile with my hair and didn't think I could by being natural. After suffering hair loss from medicine I was taking, my beautician had to shave a lot of my hair off. I tried to grow it back ,but i was still relaxing my hair ,so that was even more chemicals. Finally I decided not to get another relaxer because I’ve gone without relaxers before to grow my hair ,so I decided to do it again. I wasn't trying to go natural ,but a lot of my friends have recently BC’ed and I found all these amazing websites and videos. I decided that maybe I could do it too. I had a year worth of new growth so finally last year I decided to slowly nip away my relaxed ends. The back and sides of my hair were already natural due to being shaved off, So I figured ,I may as well go ahead and cut it since I already had witnessed the loss of “hair” and wouldn’t be in shock.

Was your transition a long or short one?

My transition was long, Mainly because I didn’t know what I really wanted to do with my hair. I was fed up with chemicals and relaxers. I wanted to grow my hair back but didn’t have too many options.

We all know how important it is to moisturize our hair while in transition, what products did you use to keep your hair moisturized?

I would deep condition with tea tree oil and I mostly used products with olive oil.

What was your staple hairstyle while in transition?

Anything with weave, I wore ponytails for a long time. I would gel my hair back and be off to work. I also did extensions for a short time ,but it was a lot of work to maintain the style. I wish I would have known about all these websites ,so I could research transitioning hairstyles back then.

When you decided to Big Chop, how did you feel about your cut? And how did people react to it?

I didn’t wear my hair out for 5 months, no one knew about it. I was very insecure. Plus I didn’t know too many natural women ,and I knew people would have a lot to say, so I hid my hair until this past November. I got tired of wearing all the extensions. I got a glimpse of how soft and curly my hair could be and one day decided to go at it! The good thing is that my co-workers and friends were very supportive. My family is not as supportive, but it’s really their own personal issues ,which I don’t consider to be my problem.

Did you have any regrets?

I waited too long!

What are your long term goals for your hair journey?

To maintain healthy and happy hair! I’ve just started the henna treatments and I’m noticing results. Being natural is a lifestyle choice for me. I’m taking account of everything I eat, products I use on my skin and hair. It’s a choice that I’ve made and I’m not turning back.

THE EVER GROWING PUFF (PART 2)

Whoo hoo!!! Finally after 7 months, I've been waiting for the day to come when i would start seeing a nice round puff like this.Only thing is, i had to stretch out the middle a bit with the blow dryer cause it was shrunken in my head.So I'm looking forward to posting more updates on my ever growing puff. Until next time.

BIANCA~BEFORE AND AFTER

Meet Bianca, her only regret was not going natural sooner!!

How long were you thinking of going natural? Whats the story ?

Well, my mother had went natural a few years ago. She lives in Cali and I live in Ohio. And we would talk about her transition and how she would style her hair. But, it wasn't until I saw her that I said I would do it. I mean literally over night, I told myself that there would be no more chemicals for me. I started doing research online and looking at fotki albums. It wasn't until I discovered youtube videos that really gave me the confidence to do it! Youtube changed my life!

Was your transition a long or short one?

Well ,my plan was to transition for a year. I started out just wearing roller and rod sets, Then I moved to braids and wore those for a few months. When I took my first set of braids out, the plan was to get them re done, Never happened!! I was going to go to the shop to get a trim, I told my boyfriend that night that I didn't want to deal with the two textures and I was going to big chop. He didn't believe me of course! No one did! LOL! But, I got to the shop and I told her to cut it all off. She looked at me like I was crazy as did the other women in the shop. I didn't care! I felt so good and free after.

We all know how important it is to moisturize our hair
while in transition, what products did you use to keep
your hair moisturized?

During my transition I kept it very simple, I used Karen's body beautiful hair milk and hair butter, Because my hair stayed in braids it was rarely out.

What was your staple hairstyle while in transition?

My staple in the beginning was rod and roller sets, then braids.

When you decided to Big Chop, how did you feel about your cut? And how did people react to it?

I felt so great after my big chop! I mean the freedom! It was raining that day and I remember not needing an umbrella! I remember walking out the shop with my head held high as other women stared and probably thought I was crazy! LOL! My boyfriend loved it! He even shaped me up! My family and friends loved it. Everyone said it brought out my eyes and cheekbones! Sometimes I get an urge to cut it that short again But, I brush it off , I'm loving the growth!

Did you have any regrets?

My only regret was not doing it sooner! I wish I would of went natural years ago! Oh well, I'm glad I'm natural now and I will never go back to the creamy crack!

What are your long term goals for your hair journey?

I would like my hair to be healthy. I have big hair dreams! So I want to be able to maintain length , by keeping my hair protected, moisturized and trimming it on a regular basis.

TAI~ BEFORE AND AFTER

Meet Tai,one of her reasons for going natural was to save herself some money.

How long were you thinking of going natural? Whats the story ?

One of my older sisters actually talked me into going natural,I knew nothing about it at all. I was just at the point where i couldn't stand getting perms because it was a waste of my mom's money. I am an athlete and all i would do was sweat the perm right out...plus my hair wasn't growing!

Was your transition a long or short one?

I transitioned for about 7 months

We all know how important it is to moisturize our hair
while in transition, what products did you use to keep
your hair moisturized?

Um..I didn't know anything about hair ,so i really wasn't putting anything on it and then when i began to transition with braids, i only sprayed oil sheen on it.

What was your staple hairstyle while in transition?

Kinky twist and braids.

When you decided to Big Chop, how did you feel about your cut? And how did people react to it?

I teared up when i saw the hair on the ground, but then i smiled once i put a headband on lol.
people were shocked out of their minds and looked at me crazy..they were disappointed. I think i only had like 5 people tell me they liked it once i got it done...it hurt my feelings but i got over it very quickly

Did you have any regrets?

At first ,but then it was nothing i could really do. i just knew that now i was a diva! haha

What are your long term goals for your hair journey?
My long term goals are to keep my hair healthy always and to encourage people to embrace the real them...the way God created them :)

MY FEATURE ON BLACK GIRL WITH LONG HAIR.

The CN tower in downtown Toronto is one of the tallest structures in the world

Where are you from?
A: I am from Ontario, Canada (born and raised) and I work in sales.

What is interesting about your country?
A: Every year we have the Caribana parade, which brings thousands of people from around the world. We also have a wicked nightclub district as well.

What is the natural hair scene like in your country? Is it accepted or rejected?
A: I would say it’s 50/50. I mean I still get stares for my short curly hair, although I’m not sure whether or not they are of envy or disapproval.

Why did you go natural?
A: I started doing my reaserch on YouTube, oringinally for hairstyles for medium length relaxed hair. I came across lots of sites and videos showing women with natural hair. At that time, I was stretching my relaxers about 5 months apart and I figured ‘Why not keep going?’

I transitioned for 9 months before I decided that I was ready to do away with the relaxed stringy ends. I did my big chop May 27 09. At first I was a little shocked at what I had done, considering I did my own big chop. But then I realized that I loved my texture and it’s just hair. It will grow back.

I got a lot of questions — a lot of people asking me why I would cut off all my hair. I realized that a lot of people are misinformed. I wanted to prove to them that I was going to grow out my natural hair and they were going to love it, and most of them do now.

Where do you buy your products?
A: Either Walmart or Sally’s Beauty Supply. Right now I’m keeping it simple.

What would you like to see in your country in terms of haircare?
A: I would like to see more salons geared to natural hair .

Why do you like being natural?
A: Oh man, why don’t I love it?? I love it for its versitility, I can do any and everything with it now. I have more volume and I just can’t wait till I have a little more length.

Is there a blog/webpage/fotki where we can check your progress?
A: You can find me on naturallengths.com
I’m also on YouTube – mmizangie

BARBARA~ BEFORE AND AFTER

Meet Barbara,a fierce natural, who decided to change her style ,and think outside the norm!!

How long were you thinking of going natural? Whats the story ?

Back in 2008, I decided that I wanted to change my style. I've always had long hair, and wanted a short style, similar to the singer Fantasia Barrino. I went ahead and got the cut March 08. By the end of the year, I came to realize that maintaining the cut and styling it were more work and more expensive than I had thought. It was then that I considered going natural.

Was your transition a long or short one?

I didn't really have a transition time. I literally walked into my touch-up appointment with my stylist one day and told him to cut it off, lol. He stood in shock for a few minutes, and then said, "ok".

We all know how important it is to moisturize our hair
while in transition, what products did you use to keep
your hair moisturized?

Since I didn't do a real transition period, I didn't worry too much about prepping my hair for going natural. The products that I was using on my hair were products that my stylist used in his salon.

What was your staple hairstyle while in transition?

I was still wearing the short Fantasia inspired cut, but when I could not replicate the styling at home, I hid under my scarf.

When you decided to Big Chop, how did you feel about your cut? And how did people react to it?

When my stylist cut my permed hair off and I saw my TWA I had the BIGGEST smile on my face! It was such a liberating feeling that I almost cried. I just couldn't stop saying how happy I was with it. I was elated, my stylist was uncomfortable and unsure, lol, so he recommended that I go bald instead of rocking the TWA and I did. LOVED my bald head.

I got some mixed reactions to it. My stylist came around after he gave me a bald head and a taper, my college friends LOVED it and thought I was even more beautiful than before, my boyfriend LOVED it too. He said it was very daring, very Grace Jones, BUT, my best friend said I was crazy and couldn't understand why I would ever want to cut all of my hair off. She has also made comments to me saying that I look like a boy, which I usually just roll my eyes at these days. My grandmother came around, but each time I would get a hair cut she'd say, "No, I thought you were gonna let it grow. You need to let it grow".

Did you have any regrets?

I have absolutely NO regrets!! I love my natural curls, and I have a 6 year old daughter that I am now a positive hair role model for. She has nearly waist length natural hair and I would tell her all the time that she didn't need her hair to be straightened, that it was beautiful and cool. Now I am example to her of just how true that really is!

What are your long term goals for your hair journey?

I have been going back and forth between a TWA and bald, but this year, I think I am finally ready for some growth. I want the big afro. I want to rock the twists and twist outs. I want to rock the finger coils and the pretty hair accessories! That's where I am headed on my natural hair journey.

LA SHEA~ BEFORE AND AFTER

Meet LaShea Williams from hairlista.com.
One of her regrets was that she didn't stop relaxing her hair sooner!

How long were you thinking of going natural? Whats the story ?

I never thought of myself really going natural before, but I have always liked it. I thought to myself ,When the time was right,I most definitely will do it. Once, I saw my girl going natural, and she looked absolutely beautiful and gorgeous, she encourage me to go natural too,but I wasn't sure if I was ready for it. I did my research on youtube, nappturality's website and other websites that were helpful. I fell in love with how beautiful it was to be natural. On May 09, 2009, I decided to stop relaxing my hair, and deal with the new growth for the rest of the summer.

Was your transition a long or short one?

My transition was a short one,I stopped relaxing my hair in May 09 ,and I did the BC (big chop) on Oct 10, 2009,but I wish i had waited a year to do it.I was afraid of how short the length of my hair would be if I chopped it off too soon. I have a big head ,and people are always calling me, “Hey, Big head.” Lol.

We all know how important it is to moisturize our hair while in transition, what products did you use to keep your hair moisturized?

I really didn't know anything about how to keep the hair moisturized during transition. All I did was put oil in my hair to slick it back.

What was your staple hairstyle while in transition?

During my transition, I had to get my hair braided. I was not my own hair stylist because I was dealing with two different hair textures,It was definitely killing me. There were many times I wanted to pull my hair out, My hair was too short to style it. Most of the time, I wore a scarf to cover my hair and refused to go out.

When you decided to Big Chop, how did you feel about your cut? And how did people react to it?

I was so excited to to get my hair cut after I took the braids out. I felt very frustrated dealing with two textures ,and didn’t want to deal with it anymore.I was in such a hurry to make an appointment for my hair. I had to wait a week before i could get an appointment,I could have done it myself, but I was afraid I would have made a huge mess. Once I did the BC, I felt so free. All of my friends and some of my family supported my decision to go natural. Their questions were “Why are you going natural? How did you do it? Do you not have the need for a perm?

Did you have any regrets?

My regret, is that i didn't stop relaxing my hair sooner, but other then that ,no, not at all. I wouldn't even go back to the relaxer, and I wouldn't trade my natural hair for anything in the world. I love my natural hair. I do regret that I became a product junkie though, I couldn't find the right products to define my curl. I still haven't found a product for my hair since the BC (Big chop). I am in my third month of being happily nappy and the products that I am using is Donna Marie products. There is some curl there, but my hair is still a little dry,I am still trying to find products that will keep moisture in my hair.

What are your long term goals for your hair journey?

My goals are to keep maintaining healthy natural hair,to grow my hair out,and I would also like to learn to be able to style my hair in different ways.

The first picture is of me when i stopped relaxing my hair in May 2009

In the second picture,i am in my third month natural.

WHAT ARE YOUR LONG TERM GOALS FOR YOUR HAIR JOURNEY?

The long term goals I have for my natural hair journey, is to be between APL and BSL,to have no breakage, to have my hair well moisturized and not damaged at all...oh,and to not go crazy on heat.

MY DEFINED ECO STYLER CURLS

I posted a video on my youtube channel on Saturday night, right before i was going out. Here are some pictures of how it looked after a couple hours of being out.On day one of the style ,i had blown out my roots on a warm medium setting. Day two i decided to use the hot setting on medium. The hot setting stretched out my hair way more ,but because my hair is still short, i found myself burning my scalp,so not sure how often I'll be doing that.Let me tell you, there was some swang every time i turned my head, i loved it lol!! So.. now I'm at the club having a good Ol' time and dancing away, its that time in the course of the evening ,when us ladies like to go check ourselves out in the mirror. My hair wasn't tiny ,but it turns out that with all my dancing and sweating it completely shrunk my hair .I'll just have to deal with that for a little bit, until my hair is longer ,then I'm sure my hair won't look so short.

Here's day two hair.

MYZLUDA86~ BEFORE AND AFTER

MEET JASMINE ,WHO IS ALSO KNOWN AS MYZLUDA86 ON YOUTUBE. AFTER SHE "BIG CHOPPED" IT MADE HER FEEL FREE AND BRAND NEW.

HOW LONG WERE YOU THINKING OF GOING NATURAL ? WHAT'S THE STORY?

Well I never ever thought about natural hair ,nor did I know anything about it ,until a friend of mine introduced me to some women on youtube with natural hair back in 2008. At first I was hesitant because I just didn't want to let go of the relaxer. Then I started thinking...I do like my hair curly so why not do it any way! SO my last relaxer was in late October 2008. It didn't take me long to think about going natural once I did my research and I weighed all the benefits.

WAS YOUR TRANSITION A LONG OR SHORT ONE??

My transition ,I'd say was short. I started my transition November 2008 and chopped it all off May 26, 2009. So like ,7 months! Would that be short or in the middle lol?

WE ALL KNOW HOW IMPORTANT IT IS TO MOISTURIZE YOUR HAIR WHILE IN TRANSITION ,WHAT PRODUCTS DID YOU USE TO KEEP YOUR HAIR MOISTURIZED ?

When I was transitioning, to be honest, I was still learning and didn't know much about keeping my hair moisturized. A product that I did use for that at the time was Hollywood Beauty's Castor Oil...I no longer use this product (don't like the ingredients) And Cantu Shea Butter Oil Sheen. Now I think I have it together! I use shea butter with oils to keep my hair moisturized.

WHAT WAS YOUR STAPLE HAIRSTYLE WHILE IN TRANSITION?

At the beginning of my transition phase I had micro braids but majority of the time I did roller sets, bantu knots, and flat twist outs.

WHEN YOU DECIDED TO BIG CHOP ,HOW DID YOU FEEL ABOUT YOUR CUT? AND HOW DID PEOPLE REACT TO IT?

When I did decide to do the big chop I was TOTALLY excited and anxious about the cut lol! I felt free and brand new once it was all gone because those two different hair textures were killing me! People were shocked that I did it but overall they said it fit me nicely. Now that I look at old pictures I'm like WOW I ACTUALLY DID THAT!!

DID YOU HAVE ANY REGRETS?? AND WHY?

The only regret I have is not researching products to the T! I have given a lot of products away because I started to have allergic reactions to some of the ingredients. Other than that I wouldn't change a thing!

WHAT ARE YOUR LONG TERM GOALS FOR YOUR HAIR JOURNEY?

My long term goals for my hair journey is just to keep my products and hair regimen simple and easy. Another thing is just to continue to have healthy hair and try new hair styles.

The first pic is a roller set that I did on my hair while transitioning, the middle is my relaxed days and the last is me now!

RELAXED2NATURAL ~ BEFORE AND AFTER

MEET RELAXED2NATURAL...A FLY NATURAL WHO DECIDED TO DO AWAY WITH THE HAIR TRENDS ,AND START MAINTAINING NATURAL HEALTHY HAIR.

HOW LONG WERE YOU THINKING OF GOING NATURAL ? WHAT'S THE STORY?

I had my first relaxer around the age of Five. Majority of my life ,i've had a head full of hair.It wasn't necessarily damaged ,but it was pretty long and pretty full.It was until i started getting a little scissor happy in highschool. You know everyone wanted to rock that snazy symmetrical bob Rhianna had ,once upon a time. Anywho >-> lol I've always had a thing for big hair ,and curls .Once I figured out i could achieve that ,chemical free i was sold. I had been saying ,i had wanted to go natural for years, but never went through with it, for many reasons,I was discouraged. A lot of it was due to fear of what others would think of me..after all, i was the girl with 'good" hair,i was the girl that everybody made a big deal about, even when i got my ends trimmed! But i went through with it and I'm glad i did!

WAS YOUR TRANSITION A LONG OR SHORT ONE??

Others may not think so ,but i considered my transition long! I Actually transitioned for 9 months which was LONG enough for me! While i learned a lot about my hair over the time ,once i got to that sixth month, that anxiety started kicking in and i was through dealing with it. lol

WE ALL KNOW HOW IMPORTANT IT IS TO MOISTURIZE YOUR HAIR WHILE IN TRANSITION ,WHAT PRODUCTS DID YOU USE TO KEEP YOUR HAIR MOISTURIZED ?

Yeeeeaaaa ,as i entered my transition i also entered my product junky phase! LoL I'll say the products that i stayed loyal to (and still do today) as far as moisturizing ,included shea butter, coconut oil and doo gro MEGA THICK growth oil (yes i purposely info-sized the "mega thick" because Doo Gro has two hair oils and this is the one without mineral oil, the ingredients are WAY better in this one). I used those products along with co-washing every week 1-2x a week.

WHAT WAS YOUR STAPLE HAIRSTYLE WHILE IN TRANSITION?

My staple hair styles while transitioning was a braid-kinky twists-cornrow combo. However, around the last month and a half of my transition ,i wanted to get to know my hair ,so i stayed away from the weave and did more braid-outs, twist-outs and even bantu knots.

WHEN YOU DECIDED TO BIG CHOP ,HOW DID YOU FEEL ABOUT YOUR CUT? AND HOW DID PEOPLE REACT TO IT?
I actually BC'ed myself! i was doing pretty good in the beginning and when i was about half way done the "what did i just do" started kicking in LoL! Once i was finished i fell in love with it though. A lot of people were shocked because they thought I'd grow my hair out longer..They didn't think I'd go through with it. All the doubts only motivated me.

DID YOU HAVE ANY REGRETS??

My only regret was that i didn't cut my hair sooner! Dealing with those two textures were uuuggghhh! words can't even explain how horrible it was for me because my hair is so thick! it would take me HOURS just to detangle my hair lets alone style it! I would get so frustrated with it! If only i would have big chopped sooner *long sigh* i would've saved myself so much grief! So for those of you still debating...chop that mess off!

WHAT ARE YOUR LONG TERM GOALS FOR YOUR HAIR JOURNEY?

My long term goals for my hair journey? Of course i want to focus on maintaining healthy hair. As of right now I'm not really focusing on length. I heart my TWA =) with a passion! a fierce passion lol! plus I've notice that my hair grows pretty fast. But right now health is my main focus: using the right products, keeping my hair moisturized, protective styling, eating and drinking the right things, etc.
